Faith and Time

James 4:13-17

God is in control of our time, our lives, and our future. We have been enchanted into believing that this world is all there is, and so driven into self-sufficiency and self-preservation. Because of our tendency to see ourselves as more independent, more powerful, and more sufficient than we are James has to remind us of our fragility.

Yet, everyone dies. Sickness and suffering are reminders of our fragility. God will give us grace and strength to persevere. We are to live for God's will, and in light of it. Only what God has purposed will prevail, and only God stands as the all-powerful, all-knowing, and all-present one. God is supreme over all weather, political movements, rises and falls of financial markets, the universe and everything in it. Let us marvel at God's sovereignty, and rejoice in the purpose of God, who is infinitely loving, and wants to have a relationship with us, accomplished only through the substitutionary death of Jesus, God's son.
