A God to be Enjoyed

What do you truly treasure in life?

Our purpose is to know God, and enjoy him forever. Being joyful in the Lord is also one of the most powerful apologetic tools we can use to make Jesus known. Jesus knows the heart desires treasure, but also that the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil, so he offers us the greatest treasure of all that never corrupts: the kingdom of heaven.

Through a parable, which is both a short story and Trojan puzzle designed to puzzle and conquer, Jesus explains how the kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in a field. The fact that it’s hidden tells us that not many know that the treasure of heaven exists, or if they do know of it, they devalue and remain skeptic about the treasure. When the man in the parable finds the treasure of heaven, he sells everything he has to buy the field, not begrudgingly nor in sacrifice, but out of joy because he knows the hidden treasure is far greater than any material possessions.

Christianity isn’t about knowing we are spiritually rich, but admitting that we are spiritually poor and in need of heaven’s treasure (Jesus). Let us realise that nothing else could ever truly satisfy, wholeheartedly seeking Jesus as the true treasure of our souls.

Joel Deacon

Joel Deacon is the Lead Pastor of City on a Hill Wollongong. He is firmly convinced that we are designed for community, especially in a big and sometimes lonely city like Wollongong. Before becoming a pastor, Joel worked as a Civil Engineer and is always up for a chat about roads and bridges. But his greatest passion is talking to people about Jesus. Joel is married to Emma, and they have three kids Elijah, Isaac and Lily. An ideal day off for Joel would include coffee with his wife, smelling flowers with his daughter, wrestling with his boys, reading, and staying up late to watch EPL.
