True repentance and guilt over sin

Psalm 51

Guilt over sin is God’s kindness to us, reminding us that we have done something wrong and we need to do something to rectify that. Guilt over sin reminds us that our nature is sinful, naturally rebellious toward God. Our sinful nature is not easily fixed. Guilt over sin reminds us that our sinful nature still wars within us.

When we act in sin we are telling God that we get to define what is right and what is wrong. We have classified sins, and given them levels, as if some are more respectable than others. Yet, all sin is rebellion against God, displeasing Him and damaging us.

There is freedom in the grace of God. We must let go of defensive hearts that minimise sin and claim we’re good, knowing that we are guilty before God and that only Jesus can set us free. We must come with our shame and empty hands to Him, knowing we are loved and forgiven by his mercy. God will never reject a humble heart that is broken over sin, and accepts Jesus as the only way to forgiveness and salvation.

Khoi Phuong

Khoi is the Associate Pastor of City on a Hill Melbourne West. He has a deep heart for communities of life, love and mission, as he passionately wants to see the gospel of Jesus make an impact in the western suburbs of Melbourne. Khoi’s favourite community, of course, is at home with his wife and two boys. He is an avid sports fan who supports mostly losing teams – which keeps him pretty humble (and sad).
