Faith and Temptation
James 1:12-18
The challenge posed to us in James is that it's not enough to just say we know what to do, but to actually do it. We are challenged to remain steadfast in the faith lest we be seduced and led astray. We are encouraged to run the race, knowing we do not belong to the devil but to Jesus, that by his Spirit we can say yes to Jesus and no to sin.
Hypocrisy is born from seduction and temptation. Know you can say no to sin and flee from it like Joseph when tempted by Pharaoh's wife. Address the desires of your heart which are causing you to sin, not just focusing on the behaviour but asking why that behaviour occurs. Finally, to remain steadfast in the faith we must set the eyes of our heart on the goodness of God. Like Augustine says: Let us recall that God has made us for himself, and our hearts are restless until it rests in him. Let us repent of our sins and know that Jesus will welcome us home because his grace is sufficient.
