Before Abraham Was, I Am

John 8:31-59

Before Abraham was, Jesus was. Yet, that’s not the phrase Jesus uses. Jesus says: ‘before Abraham was, I AM’ to signify that He is Yahweh in human flesh. To show that his existence is in the continual present tense: Jesus is saying ‘I AM in the past, I AM in the present, and I AM in the future’.

Jesus reminds us that he is the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob. The irony is that this statement made the religious priests attempt to stone him, but when Jesus fled he met a blind man who recognised him as the Son of God. In Jesus, we see the real God that reminds us we are slaves to sin but we don’t need to be. That he has come, as has been promised, to invite us to be adopted as sons and daughters of God.

We are not slaves in the house of a master, striving to be needed lest we be kicked out; we are adopted children of a good Father, who know we belong to the house of God. We receive all the rights and responsibilities that come with being a child of God.
